The Kookamonga

The Kookamonga

Kooky Canuck: You know the burger is huge when out of about 2,000 people that have tried to eat it only 5 have succeed. What is even crazier is that one guy has done it 3 different times! This is what you get when you challenge the Kookamonga and try to eat the LB burger with 4 LB of beef, LB of veggies on a 2 LB bun, all in 60 minutes.

When you read the list of ingredients you just wonder what on earth someone is thinking to try and eat it. The buns look like the size of a cushion for a stool, and there are two of them, no slicing them in half. To get an idea of how big the patty itself is think about those 5 LB logs of ground beef you buy at the store and only cutting a pound off of it. To not skimp on the quality they use 80% ground chuck, which is the same quality they use on their high quality burgers. Then they put on 8 slices of cheese, a whole onion, a whole tomato, and some lettuce.

You look at this burger and you just wonder what would possess a man or woman to even try and eat this thing, let alone eat it 3 times. Now you have 60 minutes to eat it and yet the record holder ate it in only 7 minutes 36 seconds. The name of this man will be familiar from my last post, Joey Chestnut, the eating machine. This is truly Crazy Eats.

72 oz Steak Challenge

August 13, 2009

72 oz Steak

72 oz Steak

The Big Texan: This is one of the original challenges and it is a classic that defeats  5 out of 6 that have the stomach to try it. I love steak but I couldn’t imagine eating a 4 ½ LB steak in an hour plus a shrimp cocktail, dinner salad, baked potato, and a roll. That is just insane. Reminds me of the Ole 96er from the move “The Great Outdoors” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095253/

This all started when there was contest held for cowboys to see who could eat the most 1LB steaks, they each put $5 into a hat to go to the winner. The winner ate 4 ½  plus the shrimp cocktail, salad, potato, and roll. The owner decided that if anyone could match it they would eat for free. And so was born the challenge.

They have had a little old 69yr old grandma finish it off and the record is held by competitive eater Joey Chestnut, who ate it in 8 minutes 52 seconds. He is inhuman! There have even been people who have eaten 2 in the hour. That is SO much food that it makes my head hurt, but hey, that is some Crazy Eats.

Decadent Breakfast

August 12, 2009

Breakfast or Dessert?

Breakfast or Dessert?

Deluca’s Restaurant: I know that I have sweet tooth so a place like Deluca’s Restaurant is just my kind of place. They are home to some of the most extravagant and decadent breakfast dishes around. They have 8 different whipped cream covered breakfast dishes so that you can remember the days when pancakes and waffles could only come with whipped cream. The one that makes me hungry is their chocolate chip pancakes, topped with ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, nuts, and strawberries called the Chocolate Chip Hot-ade.

Their huge portions of traditional diner food have become famous and legendary in Pittsburgh. The delicious crepes are filled with creme, fruit and chocolate and there are huge, over-sized omelets made to order. So eat to your hearts content. For the really hungry you can get either the 2LB breakfast burrito or the 2 1/4LB mixed grill with veggies, potatoes, meat and eggs.

This place has some Crazy Eats because of the incredible breakfast/dessert dishes and also some big portions of good food. Just make sure you get there in plenty of time because there is always a line at breakfast time. So plan ahead and expect to wait because it always puts a damper on the day when you want to check out a great spot to eat and don’t plan for the long line.

The Burger from HELL

August 11, 2009

Coyote Bluff: This place is know for one thing, the “Burger from HELL”. All the burgers here start off at 1/2lb and are covered with a stainless steel bowl after flipping to cook them all the way through with steam, now that is a novel idea that I will have to try sometime. You ever do that to melt the cheese on your own burger creation? I have, it works great! There are ten different burgers that they offer but the “Burger from HELL” is a whole other beast.

The “Burger from HELL” starts life like the rest of the burgers but that is where things go all wrong, or right, and that depends on your point of view. They then turn this into some real Crazy Eats by adding a cup full of grilled jalapenos, some homemade habenero sauce and cayenne sauce are add to this inferno. To finish it off they smother it in a handful of mozzarella and cheddar cheese on top then put the stainless steel bowl over it to melt it into a delectable piece of hell.

This place is full of good, hearty food and they have a strong following so expect line. Also get the chili cheese fries, 2LB of fries, 1LB of cheese and plenty of green chili’s on top for some more spice.  Look forward to eating in a classic old greasy spoon and enjoy yourself.

This blog is dedicated to the wonderful world of eating out and enjoying truly unique, or crazy, experience. I love going to places where they have something that is just out of the ordinary, whether it is the waiters/waitresses or servings that are beyond large. Think of when you were first told about a place and your reaction was simply “that is crazy!”  Every time I watch shows like Man vs Food on the Travel Channel or Drive-In’s, Diner’s, and Dive’s on the Food Network, I think about where is there a site that has compiled all for these great places so that I can visit them and share my finds as well.  So I have to decided to create one, Crazy-Eats.com. This blog is the pre-launch step that will allow me to post my finds as I scourer the internet to find these places of crazy eats and then allow my fellow crazy eaters to post their favorite places to visit. I am going to start with the ones that can have been visited by the TV shows and then I will keep looking for more great places. I am looking for your help to find the places that truly are Crazy Eats.
