Just ONE of the sandwiches!

Just ONE of the sandwiches!

Lucky’s Sandwich Company: A few years ago a guy stumbled into Lucky’s after a few too many drinks and with a huge appetite, he then proceeded to eat 3 of their LB stuffed sandwiches. Now that is just crazy and the owner thought so as well and so he created the Overstuffed Sandwich Challenge in honor of this guys feat. Now I have written about stuffed sandwiches before (see the post for Primanti’s Brothers) and so I am really looking forward to finding a place that makes stuffed sandwiches. Lucky’s Sandwich Company was opened in 2004 and with a simple menu of sandwiches, salads, chili, chicken tenders, fries, and wings. Oh and plenty of beer.

Now I wondered why this place is called Lucky’s and I found out that it is named after a former part owner of the Cubs who was the man who got Wrigley Field built. There are 17 different sandwiches to choose from and I want to try the Fredo, which is ham, salami, capicola and swiss, just because of the name. I don’t know if it is named for Fredo Corleone but I just want to try it. If that is not enough I can even add extras such as doubling the meat, adding a fried egg, or other things. This all sounds so good to me but of course this isn’t good eats, it is crazy eats and so the crazy thing here is the overstuffed sandwich challenge. They give each person an hour to eat the 3 sandwiches of your choice and if you eat the sandwiches in under 30 minutes you don’t have to pay for them, a little incentive to eat fast.  Each sandwich is made on thick sliced french bread with your choice of meat, cheese, an egg, tomato, coleslaw, and two handfuls of fries. Finish them all in less than an hour and you get your picture on the wall.

The Dagwood Challenge

The Dagwood Sandwich

The Dagwood Sandwich

Ohio Deli: One of my favorite comic strips is Blondie and I always get a kick out of the huge sandwiches that Dagwood Bumstead, the main character, makes. These sandwiches were not the type of sandwiches you normally see, in that they were made on sliced bread not on a big roll and so they were tall, not long. Well the Ohio Deli has decided that it needed to bring this sandwich to life with it’s Dagwood challenge.

Now instead of sliced bread they use part of a roll, which it is very necessary to have an upper and lower crust if you are trying to handle a sandwich this big. The Dagwood is a LB cold-cut sandwich that is served with a 1 LB of fries. Over 2,000 people have tried to eat it in 30 minutes but roughly 400 have succeeded and had their pictures posted on the wall.

The Dagwood is made with 7oz of smoked turkey, 7oz of Virginia ham, 7 oz of roast sirloin, swiss and american cheese, veggies, and roasted garlic mayo. They then slice it in half so you get this beautiful layering effect that would make Dagwood Bumstead proud to have a sandwich named after him and that makes it some crazy eats. If in the 30 minutes you defeat it you will get a t-shirt to declare it to the world.

primanti's Stuffed Sandwich

primanti's Stuffed Sandwich

Primanti Brothers: This place had the great idea of putting the sides that they would normally serve with the sandwich and instead putting them in the sandwich and hence the original stuffed sandwich. Now this is a great Crazy Eats idea for those on the go and makes me want to try it myself. I bet we have all made sandwiches where we put potato chips or something else our mom’s packed for lunch, inside of the sandwich instead of eating it on the side. They have over 20 mega sized sandwiches on the menu that range from the fish & cheese to Black Angus top sirloin steak & cheese.

If the sandwich is still not big enough for you you can get it with double the meat, an extra egg, and of course extra cheese. Think this is how I will get mine when I finally get to try out this Pittsburgh treasure. All of these sandwiches are served up hot, so the cheese is all melted and gooie, just the way we like it. The kicker for all this is that they don’t serve it up on regular sliced bread or even a roll, they put it all on hand slice Italian bread. The slices for these sandwiches are the type of slices you would make for yourself were you making yourself a sandwich, nice and thick.
