Schmidt's Bahama Mama Sausage

Schmidt's Bahama Mama Sausage

Schmidt’s Sausage Haus: If you, like me, have any German ancestors you have to check out this place and see what German food is all about, sausage. This place opened originally as a sausage packing house in 1886 and then in 1966 they decided to open up the restaurant. So you will be hard pressed to find a place with more tradition and authenticity in serving good German food.

For the sausage lover, like me, you have to take a ride on the Autobahn, which is Schmidt’s sausage buffet and get your fill of sausage and fixings on their sausage buffet. Be sure to try their house special, the Bahama Mama which is made of secret blend of hot and exotic spices meant to take your taste buds to the Bahamas. Now this is a place that knows what a good sausage is made of.

On the Autobahn, officially called the German Autobahn Buffet,  you can eat all the sausage that you want and since nothings goes better with sausage then some red cabbage and sauerkraut, be sure to pile it on. They even have sausage stew, I am going to have to try some of that since I have never had it before. When I go I will have to remember to save some room for dessert since this place is also famous for their ½ LB cream puffs that you can get in flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter fudge which sounds like some Crazy Eats that I want to try.

The Thurmanator

The Thurmanator

The Thurmanator

Thurman Cafe: I think it is great that getting “Thurmanized” is part of the local jargon in Columbus and what they mean is that by having your first Thurman burger, you have been “Thurmanized”. That is a good sign of things to come. Thurman café serves up 17 different types of burgers plus 5 that are sometimes on the menu as specials. Each of these burgers start off as a ¾ LB patty and when burger starts with that you know you are going to have something good coming your way.

This placed opened originally as a bar and has evolved into a great place to get burgers, so the décor is that of your typical bar & grill. They have lots of different appetizers to try, so if you are with a group and you don’t think that a ¾ LB burger is enough for you be sure to get some of their hand cut fries, maybe even put some cheddar cheese on there also.

The ultimate burger that they serve here is the Thurmanator. This burger was developed for the competitors that come for the Arnold Bodybuilding Classic and if you have ever watched “World’s Strongest Man” on ESPN you know these are big boys and any food made to satisfy them is some Crazy Eats. The Thurmanator is a standard Thurman combined with a bacon cheddar burger, so it is a 1 1/2LB burger topped with ham, bacon, cheddar, provolone, american cheeses, mushrooms, and onions.
